Make the ACT–NSW distinction explicit
If a transaction, event or proceeding is connected to Queanbeyan or another NSW location, identify that in the enquiry. Ask whether the office handles the relevant jurisdiction and whether its proposal covers all parts of the work. Do not apply ACT assumptions to a NSW property or vice versa because an office is geographically close. Use the location named on the contract, notice or court document when asking for an initial assessment.
Describe the work, not just the institution
An enquiry involving an employer, public body or business still needs a defined task. Say whether you want a document explained, a response prepared, a decision reviewed or representation discussed. Ask which client roles the office accepts and what information it needs for conflicts. A broad administrative-law or employment-law category does not establish that the practice can act on every issue involving government or a workplace.
Find professional and assistance information
The ACT Law Society's Find a Lawyer resource and Legal Aid ACT are separate public starting points. Use the professional body for practitioner information and the assistance service to ask what help it can provide. If a public result does not establish current professional status, ask the responsible authority. For an appointment, clarify remote access, documents, scope and any date already communicated before assuming a booking covers the work.
Questions for a local shortlist
- Is the work governed by an ACT, NSW or federal process?
- Do you accept clients in my role for this type of enquiry?
- Which part of the work is included in the initial engagement?
